Some good programmes to look out for are:
- Пусть говорят (category: “Ток-шоу”): imagine a fusion of Jeremy Paxman interviews with The Jeremy Kyle Show and This is Your Life, with plenty of audience participation. This debate show will cover anything pretty much anything from scandals and even murders to celebrating a celebrity’s achievements on an important birthday. Anna Chapman famously received a lion cub on this programme when she was invited onto the show after being returned to Russia. Excellent for finding about Russian culture and opinions on the issues facing Russia today.
- Давай поженимся (category: “Ток-шоу”): Dating show very popular with third year Russian students on their year abroad.

Another good channel is СТС. This channel does not allow access to its live stream or TV catch-up outside Russia, but many of its programmes can be found on Youtube or Google videos. Less serious than Первый Канал , СТС has a large range of programmes aimed at children and teenagers (good for language learners as the speech tends to be slower and the language simpler), as well as comedies and reality TV shows. Some good programmes to search for are:
- Папины Дочки (sitcom)
- Игрушки (sitcom) NB: search for “сериал игрушки” to avoid strange results
- Воронины (sitcom)
- Галилео (science & discovery) NB: search for “галилео стс”
- Шесть кадров (comedy sketch show)
- Даёшь молодёжь! (comedy sketch show)
- Снимите это немедленно (Russian version of What Not to Wear)
- Ранетки (Teenage soap drama about a pop band) NB: search for “Ранетки серия” otherwise you will end up with their music videos and interviews.

Search tips: The Russian for “series” or “season” is “сезон”, and “episode” is “серия”. So for example, to search for the first episode of series 2 of Папины Дочки, you need to type “Папины Дочки сезон 2 серия 1”. However, Russians often count episodes from the first ever made rather than the start of the series, so this episode would be “Папины Дочки сезон 2 021”.
