Performance: Researchers Test Meditation’s Impact on Alertness
Meditation is often credited with helping people feel more focused and energetic, but are the benefits measurable?
A new study suggests that they are. When researchers tested the alertness of volunteers, they found that the practice proved more effective than naps, exercise or caffeine. The results were presented at a recent conference of the Society for Neuroscience.
The researchers, led by Prashant Kaul of the University of Kentucky, took 12 students who did not meditate and taught them the basics in two short sessions.
Then, over a series of weeks, the students were asked to come in and take a test devised to measure skills like reaction time. The tests involved a series of visual cues on a display screen that the volunteers had to react to by pushing the correct button.
The students were asked to take the tests in mid- to late afternoon, when people tend to be sleepiest. They did so before and after 40 minutes of meditating, napping or exercising, or after taking caffeine. Napping produced poor results, presumably because of “sleep inertia,” the researchers said.
Caffeine helped, and exercise was unpredictable.
Earlier studies have found that people are awake while meditating but that their brains undergo changes similar to patterns found in sleep. Some studies have found that people who meditate a lot report sleeping less, so the researchers were curious to see if meditation could serve the same function as sleep. The results support the idea that it can.
In fact, when some of the students were asked to skip a night’s sleep and then take the test, the researchers said, meditation was even more helpful.
They said they did not know if caffeine and meditation combined would be even better.

THE WIND HORSES
THE WIND HORSES
I built a monastery among the quiet mysteries of high peaks
hoping monks would come, walking sticks in hand, and find repose.
From The Mountain Poems of Hsieh Ling-yun
This is a meditation of sorts. A candle lit at sunset, a remembrance, a beginning.
What brings us to this place but intuition, a seventh sense,
A Seeing, beyond intellect and reason. When a space shuttle fires its rockets
At first there is no upward motion. It hovers in great clouds of smoke,
As though enormous decisions are being made.
Then, strand by invisible strand, the ties with gravity
Are cut, and a great silver arrow arcs into the sky.
There are analogous rites of passage in our lives, times of discipline and trust,
When we hover over what has been safe and familiar,
Above the launching pad, clouded by our fear of the new.
We feel the thunder of engines, see the smoke, but feel immobilized,
Yearning to be free of the past, leaning toward an imagined future,
Some future or other, that we have conjured as our highest good.
Then a sudden surge, and we feel the full force of the universe
Lifting us upward into the light, into a heaven far wider than we had imagined.
We become pure flight, and suddenly, no words or dreaming can capture
The new reality. I feel this breaking free, the power, the speed.
This is what I know: everything is a journey, each indrawn breath, each heartbeat,
Each bold new adventure into a cosmos that holds all possibilities.
When I reach out into the Void, I find no word-forms that can contain
This sense of mystery and sudden grace. Still, it seems important to try.
I am wondering what I can say, ever, that would speak to your soul, here
In this indigo evening. I am reaching for that inner language,
The Language That Lives Beyond Words, in the once upon a time.
I can call in some images, but they will be imperfect. Still, they will
Welcome you into the garden of my imagination, invite you to suspend disbelief
And pretend that we are in a harbor café, telling stories of Artemis and Persephone,
Drinking strong fragrant coffee, honey sweet, or perhaps walking on the breakwater At Rhodes remembering the Seven Wonders of the World. Over there, look,
At where the Colossus guarded the harbor in that far and ancient time.
Here is the paradox: only these words, hieroglyphic as they may be,
Can map and navigate these our heavens, can add substance and form
To the invisible. Words are the stepping stones that bring me,
Step by careful step, to your temple door. Words are a ritual we perform,
Trying this form and that, to see where there is resonance and truth.
There is no formula, no plan, no calculation that can predict
This, our journey into the future. It is an act of trust, or nothing.
Hemingway said: “Play for more than you can afford to lose,
And you will learn the game.” From this point onward
There is no going back, there is only the Path we have chosen,
Or that has chosen us. Who can say? There is only the Path.
We sense the presence of the Goddess, a marine Venus.
Full fathom five, our Mother lies. Those are pearls
That were her eyes. The fishermen throw nets by torchlight,
Here in this enchanted land of our dreaming. This is what I mean:
I cannot tell you anything, anything at all,
Except that it feels important to be here with you and the moon,
Invoking the presence of futures past into this moment.
You are my calm world, here where the water lights gather.
We know there are layers of meaning that create a world beyond words.
I can say that I am feeling my way into the depths, into this soft music
Of evening, the swelling chorus of frogs, the call of night birds.
I can tell you that there are moments when I feel so overwhelmed
With a passion to live my life step by step, risking everything, that
I lose language altogether. That is how it is. It is the Way of Things.
Time and time again, life washes away my words altogether.
I pray for metaphors to anchor me, anchor my small boat
In this vast and unknown sea of enormous possibility.
I am thinking of that pine covered island in Greece,
Hovering on the horizon, an island out of time, timeless,
Where I can float just offshore, in a blue-green dream,
Riding the gentle rhythm of mermaid-blue Aegean waves.
My words, when I can catch my breath, and speak,
are simple prayers, for grace, for courage, for the will
and strength to carry on, whatever is required or needed.
I pray to live with fierce love and unimpeded joy, nothing less.
I pray to be worthy of this, the Holy Journey into Time.
At the top of the highest mountains in Nepal, there are long strings
Of multi-colored flags, streaming out into the wind,
“Wind Horses” they are called, placed there with gratitude
By climbers who made it to the top, wrote their names on stone.
The flags dance with the wind, dance against the snow and sky.
Can I make it to the mountaintop, the temenos, the sacred site,
And what, then, will I discover: myself? And will I find some new world,
And long lost future worlds within worlds? And you, do these prayers
reach you on your own journey into your necessary future?
This is how it is: Tonight, I am here dancing in the wind,
Dancing across time and space like a string of colored flags.
There is nothing else, nothing in the whole world but this dance,
This prayer that flies out into the sky in full consciousness.
The Wind Horses of my imagination are flying, flying in the Light.
The sky, the wind, the moon, the mountain, the bright snow.

Coefficient of Inefficiency
Coefficient of Inefficiency is a semi-humorous attempt of C. Northcote Parkinson to define the size of a committee or other decision making body at which it becomes completely inefficient.
In the book Parkinson's Law: The Pursuit of Progress, (London, John Murray, 1958) one of the chapters is devoted to the basic question of comitology: how committees, (government) cabinets and other such bodies are created, grow to be eventually of no relevance, or are designed such from the beginning.
Empirical evidence is drawn from government cabinets from history and contemporary evidence. Most often the minimal size of a state's most powerful and prestigious body is five members. From English history, Parkinson notes that the first cabinet has been the Council of the Crown, now the House of Lords, which has grown from an unknown initial number to 29 to 50 before 1600, when it has also lost much of its power. A new body was appointed in 1257, the "Lords of the King's Council" numbering less than 10. The body grew and eventually ceased to meet when it numbered 172 members. The third incarnation of the English cabinet was the Privy Council, initially also numbering less than 10 members. Inversely with rising membership (47 in the year 1679) the Privy Council lost power to the new (fourth incarnation) Cabinet Council, in 1615. Numbering initially eight members, it grew to 20 by 1725. In about 1740 the Cabinet Council was superseded by an inner group, called the Cabinet, numbering five in the beginning. At the time of Parkinson's study (the 1950s) this was still the official governing body. Parkinson's observation is that from 1939 on there was an effort to save the Cabinet as an institution. The membership has been fluctuating from a high of 23 members in 1939, down to 18 in 1954.
A detailed mathematical expression is proposed by Parkinson for the Coefficient of Inefficiency, featuring many possible influences. The formula remains to be empirically confirmed. Parkinson's conjecture that membership exceeding a number "between 19.9 and 22.4" makes a committee manifestly inefficient seems well justified by the evidence proposed. Less certain is the optimal number of members, which must lie between three (a physical minimum) and 20. That it may be eight seems both justified and ruled out by observation: no contemporary government in Parkinson's data set had eight members, and only the unfortunate king Charles I of England had a Committee of State with that membership.

Daniel Odier - Yoga Spandakarika, Stanzas 49 and 50
The subtle body itself is an obstacle that is tied to limited intelligence and the ego. The enslaved person has experiences that are tied to his beliefs and to the idea that he has of his body, and in this very way perpetuates the tie.
During interviews or questions, those who believe in certain things say that they are sure it is this way because they have experienced it. Not for a second do they see that their experience is caused by their belief. This is obviously something very subtle. This stanza is a little dig at the intentions of traditional yoga, where there is much discussion on different forms of the body. Here, it is simply being said that when one believes that subtle body exists, one will have an experience of the subtle body; when one believs that a bicycle created the universe, one will have mystical dreams about the bicycle that created the universe and the stigmata of a cyclist. This is therefore a key for taking inventory of our beliefs and for seeing how those experiences that confirm certain beliefs are tied to our certainities. This is something extraordinary - it deconditions us from certainty and leads us into this very Tantric domain where nothing is affirmed and nothing is denied. Then we save an extraordinary amount of energy that we can use in the real work. We no longer have this necessity to cling to beliefs and dogmas, nor to deny them: We are free. We can simply enter into the reality of the body, thoughts, sensations.
Now, each time we have an experience that seems to confirm a notion, even an uncertain one, we will continue to cling to it, but with a little smile on our lips - because we know that we are having an experience of what we believe. It is a subtle observation, as we are used to reasoning in the other direction, where we live our experiences as proof of our beliefs. It is important to do this with our little daliy beliefs as well. For tantrikas, this is play. We construct something, then take apart the thing constructed, and this leads us to spatiality.
We never have the idea that a construction is made to be definitive; rather, we see it as a cycle of appearances and disappearances. We create a vision, and we reabsorb it by attention to the vacuity that disappears in plenitude and joy. When we do lineage yoga, it is exactly the same. We create something from start to finish, we put it into vibration, and then we allow to unmake itself in light, in vibrating darkness. At the end of practice, we get a taste of space.

Onto the great platform of the greatest of all controversies, and which still rages today -- the Dvaita and Advaita and Non-Duality concepts -- he declares both are true and both are wrong. Since the Absolute is beyond all classification or expressions, neither term can be applied to it. What proceeds from the Absolute as creation or manifestation cannot be entirely a delusion, but must have a relative reality. Creator and creation imply duality, so in this sense it is correct. But also if there is perfect unity, even identity between creator and created, then to speak of non-duality is also correct. It is not actually so important to solve these problems as to be able to stand aside from them completely. When one truly realises oneness then duality and non-duality are only meaningless words and the symbols of delusion. This, for the moment, must suffice. What more do you need to know.?

Unintelligent Design
Now, with the recent discovery of a truly monstrous virus, scientists are again casting about for how best to characterize these spectral life-forms. The new virus, officially known as Mimivirus (because it mimics a bacterium), is a creature "so bizarre," as The London Telegraph described it, "and unlike anything else seen by scientists . . . that . . . it could qualify for a new domain in the tree of life." Indeed, Mimivirus is so much more genetically complex than all previously known viruses, not to mention a number of bacteria, that it seems to call for a dramatic redrawing of the tree of life.

Half of the world's human population is infected with Toxoplasma, parasites in the body—and the brain.
# Toxoplasma infection is associated with damage to astrocytes, glial cells which surround and support neurons. Schizophrenia is also associated with damage to astrocytes.
# Pregnant women with high levels of antibodies to Toxoplasma are more likely to give birth to children who will develop schizophrenia.
# Human cells raised in petri dishes, and infected with Toxoplasma, will respond to drugs like haloperidol; the growth of the parasite stops. Haloperidol is an antipsychotic, used to treat schizophrenia.

od pocasia moze zavisiet aj priemerny vek ;)
a vobec by som priemerny vek k vyspelosti civilizacie nemiesal (gruzinsko vs. usa -> podobna dlzka zivota ale kvalita uplne odlisna)
ja by som nechal iba subjektivne hodnotenie...aby to bolo objektivne ;)
