Professor John Bowen
Visiting Professor, Dept of Anthropology

Professor Bowen will be giving three lectures on Islam, secularisms, and law in the contemporary world in Lent and Summer Term 2010. Contemporary Islam is a crucial topic of present debate, and the relationship between ordinary and clerical Muslims and European nation states is of special interest in the U.K. and mainland Europe. Leverhulme Visiting Professor John Bowen is one of the world's leading anthropological expert on European Muslims and has formerly worked on Indonesian Islam. He will be extending his highly-regarded work on Islam and the state in France into the U.K. context and current research will bring this comparative scholarship into focus through a series of Leverhulme Lectures at the LSE.

Professor John Bowen is Dunbar-Van Cleve Professor in Arts & Sciences, Sociocultural Anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis
