The Korea Electro-technology Research Institute (KERI) said on Sept. 28 that it had successfully developed Korea’s first MagLev-based linear transport system, which can assist in manufacturing semiconductors and displays, in cooperation with SFA Engineering Corp.

The MagLev for the linear transport system was developed into two types — a floor carriage system for heavy load and an overhead travelling carriage system for lighter load. The floor carriage system was developed jointly by KERI and SFA as a system for carrying glass products such as LCDs, PDPs and OLEDs.

“This MagLev means a lot to us because we had to buy high-priced assembly lines and facilities for production of semiconductors and displays. Under these circumstances, all we could do was produce end-user products. But from now on, this new technology will contribute significantly to the production of many items, such as LCDs and semiconductors,” researchers of the KERI’s electric motor research center said.

Meanwhile, the MagLev system drew much attention when it was introduced by KERI at an international symposium on Linear Drives for Industry Applications (LDIA) held in Incheon in September.
