Maglev service began on Science Day, April 21, 2008, at Daejeon Expo Park. The 40-passenger prototype shuttles back and forth along a one kilometer track 16 times a day. It operates between stations at the National Science Museum and Expo Park. The state-backed Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials, along with Rotem, built the line. South Korea plans to commercialize the technology based on experience with tracks at Taeduk and Daejeon. The train service was free for public use from April 21 (Science Day) until September 2008.
