Chapter One:Black Cloud,Red Fire, Detailed plot explanation
This article aims to help people understand the plot of the first chapter of the cartoon, because this cartoon is very difficult to understand for those who have not watched Journey to the West.

I will explain what the plot is about by combining the 16th century Chinese classic Journey to the West and the 1986 TV series Journey to the West

My English is average, so please forgive me if there is anything wrong with my writing. Thank you.

This may be a story about a man and his playmate.

There was a wild black bear in the forest. One day, he met a little monk in the mountain. The black bear was kind-hearted because he used gold and silver as a gift when he first met the little monk, which showed that he didn't care about money at all.

Then he accompanied the little monk as he grew up. He looked at everything in his life and found that everyone had a beautiful cassock, but the little monk didn't. Therefore, he took the initiative to become the little monk's cassock, gorgeous and safe, and kept guarding silently.

Many years later, the little monk grew up and became the abbot of the temple, named "Elder Jinchi". Perhaps because he lacked the obsession of wearing a cassock in his childhood, he particularly liked it. Therefore, he stole and collected a lot of other people's cassocks. Note that some of the cassocks may have come from immoral sources, but he still wore the cassock of the black bear spirit, because he never forgot how his first cassock came from. He may not be a good monk morally, but he never forgot the relationship and experience with the black bear spirit.

Until later, a monk named Tang Seng came and showed him his cassock. Tang Seng's cassock was too gorgeous. It was the most precious Buddhist treasure in Journey to the West. This treasure was too precious, beautiful and noble. The abbot's heart was confused in an instant, and the idea of greed sprouted from the bottom of his heart at this moment.

The greedy thoughts became stronger and stronger, making the host restless. He wanted to set fire to Tang Monk, but Black Bear found out. Black Bear wanted to save the host and stole the cassock to stop him from thinking about it. The fire burned everything and Black Bear left.

Later, Sun Wukong went to heaven and found Guanyin Bodhisattva to ask for the cassock back. Black Bear was subdued by Guanyin and became her subordinate.

Then there was the conversation in the cartoon. The grizzly bear talked with Guanyin in the bamboo forest. Black Bear said: I don’t understand why the monk "Jin Chi" is obsessed with material things (referring to the cassock and other treasures). I never care about these (from the first time they met when they were children, Black Bear gave the little monk treasures to know that he didn’t care about money at all).

Then there was the words of Guanyin, "If he doesn’t wear the cassock, how can the world know that he is a "high monk"?"

The original story was actually meant to criticize people for being hypocritical and inconsistent in their words and deeds for the sake of money.

Just like our current life, rich people will buy some luxury goods to decorate themselves and show their uniqueness. In fact, it may be inferiority complex or inner emptiness.

Hidden Lores and Subplots You Might Have Missed: Part 1
Black Myth: Wukong features numerous lore elements, historical references, and subplots subtly embedded in the dialogues and character biographies. Here is Part 1 of a compilation that explains these details. Please be aware that the following content contains significant spoilers. If you wish to avoid spoilers, please do not read further.

I played the game in Chinese rather than English, so some of the names mentioned may differ from their English translations in the game. I will do my best to ensure consistency.

Let's begin with our favorite boss in the game. *Drum rolls*.......................................

r/BlackMythWukong - Hidden Lores and Subplots You Might Have Missed: Part 1
THE YELLOW WIND SAGE!

Did you know that in Chapter 2 of Black Myth: Wukong, the Yellow Wind Sage is not the true antagonist? The real antagonist is his master, LingJi. To understand this, we need to look back at the time when the hidden level "Kingdom of Sahali" was known as "The Realm of Gold."

"Realm of Gold" is a mistranslation. The correct term in Chinese is "The Golden Buddha Kingdom." It was a wealthy kingdom located at the world's edge where the sun sets.

The Buddha gifted the kingdom a drum to muffle the noise of the sunset, protecting the infants and children. In gratitude, the citizens built many temples and worshipped the Buddha.

Over time, the King stopped worshipping the Buddha, demolished the temples, and renamed the kingdom "The Kingdom of Sahali." Soon after, a monster named Fuban began terrorizing the kingdom whenever the drum was struck at sunset.

If you’ve fought Fuban, you might have noticed a Buddha-like face on its back. This is because LingJi sent Fuban to punish the kingdom for the King’s disrespect.

The Yellow Wind Sage fought Fuban and saved the kingdom. The King honored him by making him the kingdom's protector and building temples in his name. For a time, the kingdom thrived with other rat demons settling there—until LingJi caused more trouble.

LingJi’s motive for sending Fuban was to force the people to worship him again. However, instead of succumbing to his threats, the Yellow Wind Sage thwarted his plans and took his place. In retaliation, LingJi cursed the people of Sahali, transforming them into half-rat, half-human demons.

This event deeply affected the Yellow Wind Sage, who felt responsible for the suffering of the people. He left the Kingdom, hoping LingJi would lift the curse and restore order. Unfortunately, the curse persisted, leading to the Kingdom's eventual collapse and disappearance into the desert.

This backstory of the Yellow Wind Sage and LingJi reveals a recurring theme in Black Myth: Wukong: the Celestial Court's oppressive nature and the plight of the demons and humans who suffer as a result.

When the gods disregard the needs of others, those with enough power may seek to become gods themselves—a fate that has befallen many demons in this game.

Brief introduction to Journey To The West: essential info you need to know before starting Black Myth Wukong!
Lore
Hi guys, my name is Gray, and I’m a content creator from China. I’m thrilled to see so many passionate fellow gamers showing interest in this game and our culture!

I understand that the story of Journey to the West can be challenging for many people outside of China to grasp, so I wanted to provide a brief but effective background introduction to help everyone get to know the story. I also made a video here for visual&auditory learners: 4-Minute Crash Course to Prep you for the Game Black Myth: Wukong
https://youtu.be/UiS--ykPYV0?si=VrJn2n9WbKQF1u_A

Background of the book:

Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, written in the 16th century by 吴承恩 (Wu Cheng'en).

The novel is a mix of myth, folklore, and religious elements, and it has had a profound impact on Chinese culture and literature.

Main plot:

The story follows the journey of the monk 玄奘法师 (Master Xuanzang) (aka. 唐三藏 Tang Sanzang) from the Tang Dynasty who is tasked with traveling to India to retrieve sacred Buddhist scriptures.

Note: 玄奘法师 is often referred as 唐僧 (Tang Seng = the monk from the Tang Empire) by some.

玄奘法师 (Master Xuanzang) is accompanied by four disciples:

孙悟空 (Sun Wukong = The Monkey King): A powerful and mischievous monkey with incredible strength, agility, and the ability to transform into various beings. He was initially a rebel but was subdued by Buddha and later assigned to protect Xuanzang.

猪八戒 (Zhu Bajie = Pigsy): A pig-like creature with a gluttonous and lazy nature, who serves as a comic relief but is also a loyal companion.

沙悟净 (Sha Wujing = Sandy): A calm and loyal figure, depicted as a sand ogre.

白龙马 (BaiLoong Ma = White-Dragon Horse): Originally a dragon prince (Loong = Chinese dragon) , he was transformed into a white horse as a punishment and serves as Xuanzang’s steed.

八十一难 (81 Tribulations):

It was said that Master Xuanzang’s team had to go through 81 challenges during their journey before they could successfully reach the Buddha.

These tribulations are tests of their resolve, faith, and character, designed to purify them and help them achieve spiritual enlightenment.

Most of the tribulations feature encounters with demons, monsters, and other supernatural beings, some of them will reappear in the game and have somewhat become stronger!

Connection between the novel and the game:

The Main Character of the game “the Destined One” is likely Wukong himself, or one of his monkey minions.

It seems that the story in the game takes place after the events of Journey to the West. Based on the available contents (without giving any spoilers), it can be inferred that a great upheaval occurred in the world, leading to the resurrection of many yaoguai/demons, some of whom have even become stronger.

Maybe just like in Dark Souls, the flames are dying! or like in Elden Ring, the Ring has been shattered, transforming the Lands Between into a chaotic place.

More about Wukong

Born from a stone: Yes, Wukong was formerly a magical stone. His skin is often described as "hard as a stone". (so Wukong is supposedly an asexual monkey? xD)

The Havoc in Heaven: In his early days, Wukong proclaimed himself a title “齐天大圣 (Qi Tian Da Sheng = The Great Sage, Heaven's Equal)” and rebelled against the Heavenly order.

He single-handedly battled with the 100,000 Heavenly Soldiers and defeated many famous celestial generals, including “四大天王 the 4 Heavenly Kings” (who also appeared in the game trailer). He also had an epic battle with 二郎神-杨戬 (Erlang God Yang Jian - the God of War with three eyes) and eventually lost.

Weapons: Wukong’s weapon is called 如意金箍棒 (Ru Yi Jin Gu Bang = the Golden Staff)

Trick - 72 Transformations: Wukong is able to shapeshift into more than 72 different creatures (72 is for exaggeration). I think in the game you can also shapeshift into other animals to solve puzzles?

OK, I guess this is it, don’t want to make this tooooo long but gotta make sure I cover all the essential info (hopefully). Hope you guys like it, and again, enjoy the game!

Good summary. But I need to point out a few errors:

Sun Wukong battled with 100,000 instead of 10,000 Heavenly soldiers as described in the novel '十万天兵天将'.

It is a common misunderstanding on the 72 transformations due to translation. It does not mean that Sun Wukong can only transform into 72 creatures. It means 72 abilities, transformation being one of them. In fact, Sun Wukong can transform into anything.

Criteria to achieve the secret ending/true ending

SPOILER
Criteria to achieve the secret ending/true ending (SPOILERS)
There is a lot of confusion regarding this topic, so I would like to make a post regarding how to achieve the secret ending (true ending/good ending).

There are only TWO endings to this game. In the bad ending, the player receives the golden headband and becomes a new Wukong, and the cycle continues. In the good ending, the player receives the sixth relic and does not wear the golden headband, thus achieving Wukong’s desire to be free from control (it is the golden headband that controls him).

The requirement to achieve the true ending is very simple, you must first finish the secret quest of chapter 1 through chapter 5.

The five secret quests are the following:

Chapter 1: Whiteclad Noble will tell you about three bells. Ring all three bells around the map to be teleported to Ancient Guanyin Temple and defeat Elder Jinchi to receive the Fireproof Mantle.

Chapter 2: Yellow Robe Squire (the drunken boar NPC) will tell you about a lost kingdom of gold. Complete his questline and be teleported to the Lost Kingdom of Sahali and defeat Fuban to receive the Wind Tamer.

Chapter 3: The treasure hunter with a green rice farmer hat will tell you about a watermelon field that was planted by Buddha hundreds of years ago. Complete his questline and meet the real Maitreya Buddha, who will teach you the Spell Binder ability.

Chapter 4: Defeat the Venom Daoist in both locations, and he will open a painting that teleports you to Purple Cloud Mountain. Defeat Duskveil there to receive the Sewing Needle.

Chapter 5: The Pale-Axe Stalwart will ask you to defeat the five element carts. Upon defeating all five element carts you will be able to enter Bishui Cave. Defeat Bishui Golden Eyed Beast in Bushui Cave to learn about the truth behind the birth of Red Boy.

After finishing all five secret quests, go to the Great Pagoda in Chapter 3. Maitreya Buddha (the little kid) will be waiting there. Maitreya Buddha will not appear unless you’ve completed the five secret quests. A good way to check how many quests you’ve done is by looking at the murals on the walls of the Great Pagoda, as completing the secret quest of a chapter will fill the mural. For Maitreya Buddha to spawn every mural except the center mural must be filled. Speak with Maitreya Buddha and he will fill the center mural, which will transport you to Mount Mei for a secret boss fight with Erlang and the Four Heavenly Kings (warning, very hard fight). Upon defeating Erlang, he will give you the sixth relic, and you are free to proceed to the ending as usual. Upon finishing the game, you will realize that the player character does not accept the headband in the ending cinematic, and you achieve the true ending. In NG+ you will be able to select a passive perk for your sixth relic at the center of the circle.

Note that the NPC related to the secret quest of each Chapter (Whiteclad Noble, Drunken Boar, Treasure Hunter, Venom Daoist, Pale Axe Stalwart) are Erlang’s friends sent to test you to see if you are worthy to become a successor to Wukong. Finish all five quests and face Erlang himself for the sixth relic, and you achieve the true ending.
