Imagine the tranquil, transparent blue waters of the Mediterranean sea. Think now of that beauty taken over by an oil spill - a black mass, slowly moving towards the beach, killing animals on its way. The Mediterranean suffered many such disasters. Now, oil corporation Rockhopper wants to drill in an earthquake zone off the coast of Italy. With a high risk of spillage, the Italian government has banned it. Rockhopper’s response? Starting a legal fight and seeking more than 30 million euros in compensation from taxpayers. [1] A new European Commission proposal to set up a parallel legal system for corporations to sue democracies, could mean such cases, until now isolated, become our everyday reality. If our ministers approve it, all Europeans would be faced with many more corporate abuses like this one. We can still stop this initiative to give corporations even more privileges. European trade ministers meet in just 4 days. They are still making up their minds but will soon have to publicly support or oppose this proposal. We must act fast to make sure they hear what we, their voters, think of further privileges for corporations. We only have until 10th November! Act now, sign the petition: https://act.wemove.eu/campaigns/no-global-corporate-court |
