A few years back we used to *sigh* when a Sigma lens found its way into our labs. However, these days are gone really. Nowadays we are usually wondering in how far Sigma is going to embarrass the competition once more and the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM | A ("Art" Series) was no exception here. Given its specs it was undoubtedly one of the few surprising releases lately. The primary value prop is, of course, the ultra large aperture. However, not only that - it also manages to deliver a very high performance even at fully open aperture and downright excellent results at medium aperture settings. Combined with low CAs, the quality perception is superb and easily as good as the very best prime lenses in this category. However, there're also downsides. The vignetting is very high at f/1.8 for instance. And while the general bokeh blur is smooth, out-of-focus highlights aren't quite as impressive with a rather nervous rendition. There's also some visible bokeh fringing at large aperture although this is a rather common behavior at such settings. The distortion characteristic is about average. Coming back to some positive aspects, we have nothing but praise regarding the mechanical quality of the lens. Everything is tightly assembled using high quality materials. The non-extending zoom mechaism is certainly a highlight. Event the AF is very snappy.

That sounds pretty awesome, doesn't it ? Technically it is ... yet ... during our field sessions it didn't feel right. It just isn't your typical standard zoom lens - the 2x zoom ratio is too limiting for that. However, it is an excellent replacement for prime lenses in its range. Most prime lenses in this range aren't any better nor faster than this astounding Sigma and when thinking in this scope, it is actually a pretty cool thing. Therefore ... highly recommended!
