A long time ago, in the vast fields of central Asia, a certain plant attracted the attention of the Ancients. They crushed it, boiled it and mixed it with milk. The drink thus obtained revealed powerful mind-expanding faculties and was called Soma by those, who later becomes children of Indian, and Haoma by those, who later became children of Persia. Hundreds of prayers and songs were created to praise its properties and thanks to Soma myriads of people received the gift to “meet the gods” and “see the light”. Until it slowly disappeared into the mist of history… and its original identity was lost...
Which was the plant at the origin of Soma? Could DMT be the active principle of the mysterious drink? Could Soma be therefore the Eurasian analogue of Amazonian Ayahuasca?
In this presentation Daniel will take us on a journey along the path of his own ethnobotanic expedition, which led him from the temple of DeMeTer in Eleusis (Greece) to Afghanistan. He will brew together comparative pharmacology, computational linguistics, and ancient mythology, to support the thesis that Soma/Haoma could be obtained by mixing the MAO-inhibitor « harmaline », extracted from Peganum Harmala, with DMT potentially present in co-occurrent Phalaris grasses.
