Lego is exploring the possibility of customers making their own bricks and mini-figures using 3D printers as the Danish toymaker tries to adapt to the digital economy.

John Goodwin, Lego’s chief financial officer, told the Financial Times that Lego was not looking at 3D printing for its production process where it makes more than 2,000 bricks a second – or about 55bn a year.

But he added: “3D printing is a fascinating development and certainly opens up a lot of new avenues . . . We are looking very intently at it and monitoring it, looking at what potential opportunities there are for consumers.”
