![]() There are various ways to describe the meaning of the word disability. It can be taken into narrow meanings to describe full medical disability or can be even seen as a physical or a mental injury. The focus is sometimes also put on the result of the physical or mental illness and other times, disability is often understood through the troubles that the disabled ones face in social and physical environments. The estimated population of the disabled in our country is about 3%. However, when we take a look around, it seems to be hard to find them. Where have they gone? The distorted views of our society of the disabled, has resulted in a psychological burden for the families of the disabled. Disapproval of the disabled has led the families of the disabled to become emotionally isolated from the society as well. Visits from neighbors or friends start to fade away and even the marriages of the family members become harder to achieve. Not only this, using transportation or eating at a restaurant can become an obstacle when traveling with a disabled member of the family. Either way, they always need a helping hand and through our distorted views, they are left as a burden on their families. So many changes need to be made. How long are we to wait in this reality for what exactly? This piece expresses the hurt, pain and love of the family members of the disabled who suffer isolation from the society. My only loving baby brother Sung Gook is disabled. Ever since we were infants, we were very close, making us not only brothers but also best friends. However, one day I realized that every time we went outside together, people would look at us strange. After a while, I found out that it was because of Sung Gook and from then I was ashamed to be known as his brother and every time I looked at him, I became furious. Soon with the disappointment in myself and feeling sorry towards my brother, my behavior turned violent and I started hitting and abusing him. Even then, my little brother never once looked at me with resentment or screamed once...... The days when I didn’t know much...... I can’t imagine all the pain and scars that I might have caused him. Now old and matured, I look at him...... Still with the pure innocent eyes, my baby brother Sung Gook looks to me...... depending on me...... I now talk about my only loving baby brother.
