Podarilo sa nam spravit kratky rozhovor s Mark Spybey-om :)) a pre kratkost casu ho nechavame v povodnom zneni bez tituliek ;) 1. What brings you to Bratislava and Praha, when was the last time you played here? I last played in both cities two years ago and I very much enjoyed the people that I met, their enthusiasm for music and their openness. I also loved all of the bands that played with us. I have a theory, and I could be wrong. There is something about the recent social and cultural history of both cities and indeed the two countries that creates some kind of possibility for musicians like myself that is just difficult in many other places in the world. It’s not about money or that there is anything particularly enlightened I guess about the systems in these countries that mean they are more accommodating of diverse music and art. I think It’s about the people. I suspect it has something to do with historical, cultural and societal tension or dynamics. It may have something to do with the fact that I am not from these countries, that my relationship to them has developed over the course of my life from a distance and that I have always been fascinated with those people who grew up in the east of Europe, pre-the fall of the Soviet empire! So to be honest, given the fact that the last shows we did were so well received, I would always prefer to play in such places as opposed to a noisy rock club with a party fuelled crowd in some rock city in the USA. My memory of the shows I have done in Bratislava is that the audiences are very polite and attentive. I also love the architecture, the countryside and the beer. In that order! 2. How do you feel about Czechoslovakia? Kind of sad that it doesn’t exist anymore! Can I say that?!! I always thought it was a romantic country of hills and athletes, of aware artists and politically assertive people. I also liked their football team but we have a saying, “two for the price of one.” Both countries are good. 3. I know, you will to shows in Bratislava and Praha with more of your project. Which are they? Can you describe the differences in your perception of the projects? Yes, well Robin Storey and I were both in Zoviet-France (Robin a lot longer than me) and so when we started to make music together again, we called ourselves Reformed Faction..in part to say that we are part of the legacy of Zoviet-France and to debunk what we think are the unhelpful myths that surround that band and others like them. We’re not big on myths. We’ve released a lot of albums since 2005. For these shows we will play solo as Rapoon (Robin) and Dead Voices on Air which for these shows is me) and then we will play together, but it’s all one collage. We really enjoy this, moving from one phase to another. Robin and I have an ability to work seamlessly, it feels very natural. We always improvise, rarely if ever rehearse before shows and never plan what we are going to do. So every concert is different. 4. Are there any other musical projects you are involved with? I’ve been doing a series of collaborations, 7inch singles for the DVOA 20th anniversary series. The idea is that each single, is a little band, with it’s own name. I have just done another album with Gnome, our third that is called Three and is out soon on a Canadian label called Crime League. I have lots of other projects completed, in need of a good home but the music industry is imploding! I’m working with good labels, who still want to release physical products and that’s my priority. Reformed Faction is very, very important to me. I do love working with Robin. 5. I like very much your Beehatch project with Phil Western. Are you working on a new material with Phil? We started to work on a third Beehatch album several times but didn’t really got past the first round of sending things back and forth but yes, we spoke recently and the intention is to do something. I do love Beehatch, there is a warmth about Phil’s work that I never get anywhere near to creating. I think our sounds work well together. So yes, making another Beehatch album is a priority. I like to concentrate on creating quiet, beautiful and unsettling new music! I think that is where I am right now, all of the elements of what I do are present in the music I do now. I think Phil is in the same place, so more Beehatch should be interesting. Can’t wait to come over to Bratislava and Prague to play. Hope to see lots of people there! Mark, Thank you for the interview! Mark Spybey vystupy uz tento piatok 17.5. na evente Music Laboratory, ktory sa uskutocni vo Fuge. Mark vystupy solo ako Dead Voices On Air.
