ISS ASTRONAUTS TO RETURN LEGO ![]() 13 LEGO toy sets will be returning to Earth after spending two years in orbit on the International Space Station. The bricks are part of the 1225kg (2,700 pounds) of cargo returning to Earth aboard SpaceX's Dragon; which is due to splash down in the Pacific Ocean today (March 26). The LEGO wasn't just for fun, the toys were used to demonstrate the effects of weightlessness on simple machines and other simple experiments. Videos of these experiments were then transmitted back to Earth for classroom use. The models, which were launched partially assembled included replicas of the space shuttle and ISS itself. The 0.9m long (3ft) model ISS could only be built in space – on Earth it would collapse under its own weight. The LEGO returns coincidentally during the same week that NASA has suspended most of its educational and public outreach activities. Although ISS astronauts are eyeing off the new EV3 Mindstorms robotics kits (also made by LEGO). link / link / link |
