A newly released image from the Chandra X-ray Observatory shows the rare transit of a moon across a distant space object called the Crab Nebula. Saturn's moon Titan passed in front of the Crab, which shines brightly in X-rays, on Jan. 5, 2003. While Chandra routinely images X-rays directly, in this case it captured Titan's shadow in a technique likened to medical X-rays. The results were released Monday. The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a supernova explosion that was observed to the year 1054. ![]() The path of Titan is shown across the Crab Pulsar. The inset at lower left shows the X-ray shadow of Titan. http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/chandra_titan_040406.html |
