The vote by the people is only a courtesy. The governement does this to gauge the publics opinion. What elects our President is called the Electorial College. Each state has a set number of votes (determined by population). Those the serve the electorial college are selected by each state senate. The electorial college votes for who they want as President. Now, traditionally, the electorial college for each states has almost always voted in the same manner that the people of that state voted. For example, in 2000 the majority of people in Georgia voted for George Bush, so Georgia's members of the Electorial College voted for George Bush. However, there is no law forcing them to follow the will of the people. Actually, the people did not even start voting for the President until the 1830's. Like I said, our votes are only a courtesy, they really do not mean anything. Did you know that? The United States is NOTHING like it was founded to be. Thomas Jefferson would be happy though, but many of the others would not be. z korespondencie |
