Bristolský rodák Roly Porter má za sebou účinkovanie v priekopníckom duu Vex'd, kde spolu s Jamie Teasdalom aka Kuedo položil základy istého dubstepu. Sólový debut Aftertime (Subtext, 2010) sa zrieka beatu a okrem ťažkých sub-basových kadencií nezostáva po Vex'd ani stopa. Meditatívnosťou evokuje pomyslené splynutie Bena Frosta a Hildur Guðnadóttir, až na to, že namiesto islandskej melanchólie v ňom rezonuje industriálny chlad. Surovosť drone-dark-ambientných plôch a skratovaných vokálov príležitostne kontrastuje s harmóniami akustických nástrojov. Aftertime sa právom objavil v zoznamoch najzásadnejších albumov The Quietus či FACT a v booking wishliste Exitabu figuroval až nezdravo dlho. Ak si užívate plodnú vlnu súčasnej klasiky a temnejšie nálady Vatican Shadow, Forest Swords či Emptyset, nie je o čom... Okrem destinácií ako Berghain a Unsound si totiž Porter čoskoro do past events pridá aj novú A4. Domácu scénu zastúpi anglický kolega Aches, ktorému na Exitabe tento rok vyšlo debutové LP Glass Lip (http://exitab.exitmusic.org/album/glass-lip)

FACT Magazine on Porter: Porter has a cinematic sound designer’s ear for blending the traditional with the alien; the staccato voice on the beautiful, all too short ‘Kaitian’ that gives way into a chamber quartet, or the soft bell-like tones that are pushed aside on ‘Corrin’ to make way for guitar feedback, atonal bass and what could be metal skronk shorn of the power chords which eventually gives way to an anthemic single chord finale. This is an astonishingly focussed and self-assured album, suggesting a composer who has spent years building his oeuvre rather than a newly solo artist dropping his debut. (...) Aftertime is certainly one of the very best, if not the best, record that you will hear all year.

Roly Porter‘s debut solo album Aftertime is one of the most original, engrossing and rewarding albums you’ll hear all year. (fact)

The atmosphere throughout is one of dread, hopelessness and black unease much like that found in Andy Stott’s work of late. Ben Frost’s excellent By The Throat is another touchstone, especially on ‘Hessra’ and on the cavernous ‘Rossak’. But Aftertime is an album with such tremendous evocative depth that it stands alone nonetheless. (foxy digitalis)
