A valuable crop since ancient time, hemp has been cultured with its seeds as food, and its fibres, strongest in the plant kingdom, for the production of rope, wagon cover, canvas and sailcloth. Hemp thrives in Canada’s cool climate and can be grown without the use of pesticides, fungicide or herbicides. Industrial hemp and marijuana both belong to the same species, Cannabis sativa, but each has been modified to have different characteristics, hemp for long fibres and fast growth, marijuana for its content of the psychoactive drug, THC. Industrial hemp contains next to no THC. In 1938, the cultivation of hemp was banned by Canada and the U.S.; however, in 1998, new Canadian regulations enabled the licensed commercial cultivation of industrial hemp. Present and potential uses for industrial hemp, besides clothing, are numerous and include: fabricated auto parts; biocomposite, geotextile, wood and paper products; foodstuffs; cosmetics; biomass for fuel, heat-insulation, etc. Industrial hemp absorbs carbon dioxide five times more efficiently than the same acreage of forest and can play a role in the strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

With increasing numbers of countries embracing cannabis, the European Union is launching a toolkit to help national policy-makers frame their adult-use legislation.

In doing so, it is aligning with the continent’s changing cannabis landscape as Germany, the Netherlands, Malta, Czechia, Luxembourg and non-EU neighbour Switzerland, all develop their own recreational cannabis infrastructure.

It is also in tune with an acknowledgement by United Nations bodies that punitive prohibition has failed and needs to be replaced with a harm-reduction approach to drug control.

Created by the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA), the toolkit is to be known as Cannapol, and is designed to deliver an ‘evidence-based’ approach to continental cannabis liberalisation.

Desky pro výrobu nábytku vyrobené z technického konopí jsou mnohem pevnější než klasické dřevotřískové desky. Zjistili to vědci z Ústavu designu a nábytku a Lesnické a dřevařské fakulty Mendelovy univerzity v Brně. Technické konopí navíc roste rychleji než dřevo, nepotřebuje technické ošetření a z rostliny se využívá pouze část. Hemp could become a key tool in the fight against climate change. Like timber, hemp is a biogenic material – it’s produced by growing plants. When used to make long-lasting building materials, they provide an effective and low-tech way to reduce carbon emissions because plants absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere as they grow. This then gets stored in solid form for the foreseeable future within buildings and cities.

I have estimated that substituting concrete with cross-laminated timber in all new building floor construction globally for the next 30 years, would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by between 20 and 80 million tonnes.

Yet, hemp grows much faster than trees, growing up to four metres within four months, giving it a greater capacity to absorb CO₂ per hectare of farmed land compared to any forest or commercial crop. Industrial hemp can absorb twice as much CO₂ compared to trees, with approximately one hectare of hemp estimated to sequester between eight to 22 tonnes of CO₂ in a year.

Hromadná pripomienka k návrhu zákona, ktorým sa mení a dopĺňa zákon č. 139/1998 Z. z. o omamných látkach, psychotropných látkach a prípravkoch. Legislatívny proces č. LP/2024/114
Ministerstvo zdravotníctva Slovenskej republiky predložilo návrh zákona, ktorým by sa malo zakázať pestovanie konopy za účelom výroby CBD výťažkov. V praxi by to znamenalo zamedzenie výroby prírodných výťažkov na území Slovenskej republiky priamo z konopy a mohli by sa vyrábať len izoláty jednotlivých kanabinoidov. Tento návrh zákona by teda znamenal koniec prírodnému a slovenskému CBD.

3. Lack of funding:

Despite the legalization of medicinal cannabis in the UK in 2018, the NIHR has only funded three studies on the topic, none of which have been completed.

An invitation for medical cannabis research in 2018-2019 received only one request, which was subsequently declined.

4. Lack of interest from pharmaceutical companies:

Cannabis companies can sell their products as unlicensed medicines, which means there is less incentive to invest in rigorous clinical studies.

The traditional pharmaceutical evaluation process can be expensive and time-consuming, which can discourage cannabis companies.

5. Lack of knowledge and expertise:

There is a lack of knowledge and expertise in clinical research on medical cannabis among researchers and healthcare professionals. This can hamper the development and implementation of well-designed studies with reliable results.



Other difficulties:

Medical cannabis does not fit into the traditional model of drug evaluation.

The NIHR prioritizes research that fits within the traditional pharmaceutical evaluation process.

There is a lack of mechanisms for evaluating "botanical medicines" like cannabis.

Possible solutions:

Develop alternative research methods that are suitable for medical cannabis.

Increase funding for medical cannabis research.

Encourage collaboration between researchers, healthcare professionals and cannabis companies.

Create training programs to increase knowledge and expertise in medical cannabis clinical research.

Každý den jsou na světě potřeba statisíce litrů krevní plazmy, což se bohužel daří uspokojit jen z jedné třetiny.
