It's already a tradition - I always close Sharpe Festival at Nova Cvernovka with a dedicated set. While aiming to bringing the non-obvious bangers of the world's clubbing into light, I usually like to blend these influences with my most favourite ways how to grip & destroy the dancefloor.

That's how DJ KING KOBRA came to be - a blend of everything I like about contemporary electronic music, this time with an infusion from indonesian clubbing. Any discussion about the history and evolution of techno over the past near-four decades will always naturally be dominated by two cities: Detroit and Berlin. For a period of around 10 years, though, beginning in the mid-90s, the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, became a vital outpost for an austere, industrial-edged take on the genre that was cultivated at the now-closed U.Club.

Opened in 1993 by Tibor Holoda, the venue was situated inside a former underground nuclear bunker that was built by the ruling Communists to prepare for the possibility of Cold War-era apocalypse. Holoda and DJ partner Dalibor Kŕč – who was otherwise known under the monikers Loktibrada, Kre and Olga+Jozef – established a weekly residency at the club where they brought the techno of Detroit and Berlin, as well as the ‘Birmingham sound’ of figures like Regis and Surgeon, to tons of eager, young ravers for several years. Another key figure in the story of Slovakian techno, Juraj Tokár – otherwise known as Rumenige – joined the rotation towards the late 90s.

As the club’s reputation grew, various DJs on the global techno scene were invited to play, including the likes of Jeff Mills, Regis, Oscar Mulero and James Ruskin. In a 2012 interview with Electronic Beats, Regis described the venue (positively) as “cold, dark, sterile and brutal,” adding that “it all went hand-in-hand with the music”. The connections built with these touring circuit DJs would eventually carry over on record as Kŕč, Tokár and other U.Club-affiliated figures took to putting out their own work in the late 90s via their own labels – such as Olga+Jozef, Palicavonzvreca, Numb and Antidandruff – and others based around Europe.

Theirs was a metallic sound that was heavily influenced by the stony, stripped-back and hypnotically repetitive nature of the techno coming out of Birmingham in the 90s. If you want a full-scale introduction to the sound, your best bet is to take an hour out of your day to listen to Loktibrada and Rumenige’s brutal 2004 mix CD Evergreens & Everblacks: A Standa DJ Mix. Coming off almost as a Slovakian techno greatest hits collection, it sees the two DJs combine to run through several of their own productions, as well as those of fellow key local figures like DJ Boss and HU, and international peers such as Mulero, Christian Wünsch, Takaaki Itoh and Female. Mixed at a dizzying pace, it’s thrillingly dour and yet imbued with the deep sense of groove that all of the best techno should have.

Rumenige, Loktibrada, DJ Boss and HU all disappeared for a decade or so towards the late 00s and U.Club closed its doors in 2003, later rebranding under various different names before the space closed for good in 2019. In recent years, they’ve reappeared however, to self-reissue much of their respective back catalogues via Bandcamp, and share new music. Madrid DJ Héctor Oaks also used his OAKS imprint to shine a light on some of the best cuts from the short-lived Antidandruff label via a pair of reissues in 2020. Sitting alongside hard-edged modern industrial techno records on OAKS by the likes of D.Dan, Peder Mannerfelt and the label owner himself, it served as a fitting cross-generational homage to a brief but significant point in techno’s history that had gone all too under-the-radar since the closure of U.Club.

Olga+Jozef – ‘Late Wedding Repetitives (Untitled B1)’ (2001)

Released in 2001 as part of the eighth release on the eponymous label of Olga+Jozef – the alias of Dalibor Kŕč – this weapons-grade slab of techno hammers home the power of repetition. Stripping away the hard-hitting kicks of the usual Slovakian techno formula, and yet losing none of its power in the process, it’s a highlight of what is perhaps the best release in the Olga+Jozef label series.

Rumenige feat. Loktibrada – ‘Kylie’ (2003)

It’s a sign of how respected Bratislava’s techno scene came to be that essential Berlin techno label Tresor put this collaborative record out from Rumenige and Loktibrada in 2003. ‘Kylie’ is centred around broken techno rhythms, a funky bassline, and subtle additions of snare here and there, and certainly owes a lot to the industrial sound that Regis, Surgeon and others were banging out at their House Of God parties in the late 90s. It’s no surprise then that Regis was also enlisted to remix ‘Kylie’ for this 12-inch.

ON – ‘Ja Som Neni’ (2002)

Not much is known about who ON actually is, with their sole release being this track on a various artists release for Antidandruff in 2002. It’s highly possible that it, like all of the other cuts featured on the record, is simply just another alias of Loktibrada or Rumenige, though. Where much of the other Slovakian techno output of the late 90s and early-to-mid-00s was heavily indebted to the gritty industrial sounds being explored elsewhere around Europe, ‘Ja Som Neni’ stands out for being distinctly more melodic and beholden to the bright, soulful tones of early Detroit techno. It wasn’t all crunchy, poe-faced kicks, these guys had range too.

HU – ‘Wishful Thinking (A1)’ (2004)

HU was the alias of Peter Strakos, who became a regular fixture of U.Club parties having taken up DJing aged 17, and began producing a year later. Establishing his own label, Backstage Records, in 2002, he went on to put out five records via the imprint across two years, while also making contributions to Palicavonzvreca, Olga+Jozef (as a remixer) and London label Inceptive. This untitled cut on Backstage’s fifth release carries over the minimalistic club tool quality of classic Slovakian techno releases while adding some extra oomph via propulsive snares and hi-hats.

DJ Boss – ‘Zakruta’ (2008)

No round-up of Slovakian techno would be complete without a mention for DJ Boss, and especially ‘Zakruta’. It’s fitting that this one was released via Dutch DJ and producer Bas Mooy’s Audio Assault label, with its vigorous, unrelenting kicks certainly providing a stern test on the ears. This one has gone on to be a regular fixture in the DJ sets of Objekt in recent years, and you can find more where this came from via DJ Boss’ Bandcamp page.

31.1. som si odskočil z festivalu CTM a odohral set v berlínskom Cashmere Radio - nie úplne iba techno ale aj všeličo možné... trošku ma potrápili lokálne XDJs a mix ale inak to bola veľmi pekná skúsenosť a pri vzniku tohoto mixu bol aj sám zakladateľ Kyberie osobne! .)
