NASA Data Shows Goodall's Tanzania

This multi-satellite animation flys over the Gombe National Park, Tanzania, established in 1968. The animation was produced for Discovery Network's Animal Planet, which is airing "Return to Gombe," a program about naturalist Jane Goodall's research into the chimpanzees of Gombe. Goodall's Gombe Stream Research Center can be seen about half-way through the animation. The program premieres Monday, Mar. 8.

The animation merges image data from the joint NASA/Japan Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer instrument with digital terrain data created from ASTER data, image data from the IKONOS commercial remote sensing satellite, and digital terrain data created from IKONOS into a seamless animation. ASTER data are 15 meters (49.2 feet) spatial resolution, and IKONOS data are 4 meters (13.1 feet) resolution.
