The current incarnation of Los Angeles’s constantly evolving beat scene started with a couple of sparsely attended events at a small club named Little Temple in 2003. The nights were mainly frequented by producers and would often spill out into the parking lot, revolving around a boombox and lots of smoke. Soon after that cypher faded away, the Low End Theory party exploded and helped launch the career of Flying Lotus, a beat maker who seemed to touch hearts and minds all across the globe. Now, with his success cemented, FlyLo has continued the cycle of nurturing, and is using his Brainfeeder label and collective to bring up the next generation of sounds and producers.

    Jeremiah Jae
    Raw Money Raps

    333.jpg
“I think it’s safe to say Jeremiah Jae is one of my favorite artists of his generation. For years now I’ve been a witness to the incredible progression of his craft. This album has a complex dedication and honesty that I search for in myself with my own art. Underrated and understated, Jae is ready to show these muhfuckers what’s really good. Believe in Jeremiah Jae” – Flying Lotus

It’s truly apt that Raw Money Raps opens with Jeremiah Jae hazily reminiscing about awakening from an especially chimerical journey. After a kaleidoscopic grip of beat tapes, EPs and mixtapes that have sent wi-fi connections rumbling, as well as a move from windswept Chi-city to the home of his Brainfeeder crew in LA, Jae unveils his sprawling debut full-length release. More than just an album, this is an all-encompassing Pynchonian, Tumblr-feeding, social networked art-rap fever dream. A seismic collision of the analog and digital worlds makes for deceptively hooky beats that double as sonic rabbit-holes, all of which cradles Jae’s flow – which is a versatile instrument all it’s own, skipping from rapid, focused deliveries to surprising melodic sing-a-longs then chopped-and-screwed slump and stream of consciousness brainfloods.

To be a young producer and MC in 2012 is no easy task, however with style and substance in short order and internet democratization run-rampant, there’s arguably never been a better time for one to make their mark. Rather than jump headlong into the cresting 1990’s throwback revival, Jae develops tracks and lyrics that link technology and metaphysics in a defiantly contemporary way, flipping swag rap tropes on their head and reveals a penchant for affecting introspection. This singular approach to music is almost certainly a by-product of Jae’s split personality as a visual artist. Working in the context of fine art with paintings and collages as well as spreading into fashion design, Jae’s output aligns him with multi-media luminaries like the late, great Rammellzee.

Raw Money Raps’ first single, Money, is a where-did-my-cash-go-mid-afternoon summer jam for hot cloudy days ahead, accompanied by a suitably tweaked video directed by fellow renaissance man Flying Lotus. “Money” comes paired with another album standout in “Money and Food”, which takes trap rap’s unhinged synths and 808 kicks and filters them through Jae’s prism. Across it’s span, the album touches on fractured, cautionary headbangers (“Rover”), string-laden classicism (“Cat Fight”) and deeply psychedelic futurism (“Hercules Versus the Commune”) and in the process, ignites the brightest rising star of 2012. Prepare yourself for Jeremiah Jae’s journey.

    Teebs
    Collections 01

    333.jpg
Come peruse Collections 01, a menagerie of songs from Teebs on the Brainfeeder label. Like a cluster of exotic birds, anthology of short stories or secret case of sparkling gemstones, Collections 01 further explores the world expressed in Teebs’ previous album Ardour from several new perspectives.

While drawing from the universe of Ardour, Collections 01 is more varied with more samples, each song containing specific elements that give it a unique character. Featuring tracks with harpist Rebekah Raff and Brainfeeder cohort Austin Peralta, Collections 01 offers a range of sentiment, always elegantly displayed. From hypnotic, dust-covered beats and languid daydreams to cascading shuffles and bright bursts of color, this beautiful collection is a further glimpse into the world behind the mind’s eye of Teebs, painter of sound.

    From Teebs:
“With this record I'm trying to imagine a side project or group of mine that just so happened to make the same exact music as I'm making now. These records are neither EPs or full albums. Just mini collections of ideas...I hope to release them randomly through my life as if they were paintings in a drawn out series. The vibe I want people to be sent off with is a feeling of going out and buying some kind of rare library record they always wanted and not a "new album/EP." This will be the first 'Collections'."

    Martyn
    Masks / Viper

    >Je zaujimave toto pocut prave na BF<

    333.jpg
Eagerly anticipated return for Martyn, heralding his upcoming sophomore album on Brainfeeder. 'Masks' is suave, dynamic but rude-as-f*ck steppers' house, precision engineered to rough up dancefloors without breaking a sweat - istening to the pinched chords and pistoning, minimal drum-funk on this badboy makes pretty much all club gear we've heard this year sound a wee bit sluggish and toothless. 'Viper' appears in two versions: a kickless but still plenty 'floor-wrecking version that sound like Carl Craig with some post-junglist attitude, and then the trackier London Arches Edit. On the latter Martyn pays tribute to the ravers of SE1 with a radged-up 4/4 banger: the riffage is rudimentary, but the arrangement is complex and perfectly weight-distributed, excruciating tension and exquisite release wrought out of canny percussion edits, hectoring bleeps, low-flying strings and a groove as grimy as a club's toilet floor come 6am. Potent stuff.

    Ras G Down 2 Earth

    333.jpg
Storming new album on Ramp Recordings from Ras G, featuring no less than 19 tracks. Ras has been a cult figure among beat-heads for at least three years, with a string of dizzying releases on labels like Brainfeeder, All City and Poo-Bah; he actually first appeared on Ramp back in 2009 with the impeccably wonked-out Destination Three EP. If you've been following him all this time, you'll know roughly what to expect: druggy boom-bap derivations that wear their Dilla influence proudly (if you had any doubts about where your man's coming from, there's a track on here called 'I Love The '90s Hip Hop' that should clear things up). That said, he’s not afraid of leaps into the unknown - the red-eyed afro-dub of '(((Shrooms)))' is a real stand-out, as is the backwards-processed spiritual raga 'Peace (Salaam)'. Fans of Samiyam, Gonjasufi, Matthewdavid, FlyLo and low-slung, forward-thinking beats in general need to check this latest Cali broadcast sharpish.

The album is produced by label head Flying Lotus, who enlisted Thundercat to play bass on "MmmHmm," a track from last year's Cosmogramma. That guest appearance was just one in a long line of high profile gigs for the Los Angeles native: Thundercat's past credits include live performances and studio sessions with everyone from Snoop Dogg to the thrash metal band Suicidal Tendencies, for whom he's still a full-time member. The Golden Age of Apocalypse collects 13 tracks that Thundercat, real name Stephen Bruner, recorded over a long period of time, and that were only considered for release at Flying Lotus' urging. Guest appearances come from, among others, Erykah Badu and Bruner's Grammy award-winning brother, the drummer Ronald Bruner, Jr. You can hear one track from the album, a cover of George Duke's "For Love I Come," streamed right now on Pitchfork.

Martyn vyda svoj v poradí 2 album "Ghost People" na Brainfeedri.

    martyn.jpg
Flying Lotus has revealed his Brainfeeder imprint will release Ghost People – the much awaited second album from Martyn – later this summer.

The Dutchman’s debut album Great Lengths, released back in 2009 on his own 3024 imprint, is widely held to be one of the finest long players in the dubstep canon. With just a sprinkling of releases in the subsequent period (save for a recent killer All City split with Mike Slott), it’s clear Martijn Deykers has been dividing his time between plundering the UK for releases on 3024, forming the sounds that will make up Ghost People and honing a live set which is set to be unveiled this summer.

The news that Brainfeeder will be releasing Ghost People seems to fit given the fact Deykers has become an integral part of the network since he was invited to perform at their inaugural showcases in Los Angeles and San Francisco back in 2008. Since then the Dutchman has dropped legendary sets at Brainfeeder events across the globe.

    Samiyam Sam Baker’s Album

    1306182093_cover.jpg
Ever since he wheeled out his synthed-out, weed-sick styles on that Hyperdub EP back in 2008, we've been waiting for a proper full-length from Samiyam, and now it's finally here, on the Brainfeeder label operated by his old mucker Flying Lotus. There are a lot of cats in California repping this broken, zoned-out but reassuringly bottom-heavy hip-hop aesthetic right now - Matthewdavid, The Gaslamp Killer, and Gonjasufi, to name but a few - but for us Samiyam offers one of the most convincing and distinctive takes on the sound there is, all the while retaining a charmingly sketchy, skunk-infused quality to his beats. Comparisons to Dilla and Madlib are as justified as they are inevitable, but Sam's penchant for farty analogue funk also reminds us of Dam-Funk and Funkineven. He doesn't over-do any one idea, letting a groove ride for a couple of minutes tops then shifting gear abruptly, making for a bumpy but never dull ride. Even the most bright-eyed and bushy-tailed boogie-funk workouts - among 'em 'Bedtime' and 'Where Am I' - are laced with so many warping, disorienting effects that it's impossible to tire of 'em, and throughout proceedings there's enough bass wallop to see why this guy first attracted the attentions of Kode9. Trippy as f*ck, and quite brilliant.

    The Gaslamp Killer_Death Gate EP

    4947154938_374a63afa8.jpg

Fresh out of Brainfeeder's box of tricks, five original tracks from The Gaslamp Killer, including some assistance from his buddies Gonjasufi, Computer Jay and Mophono. 'Death Gate' is a freakin' riot of styles, as to be expected from the hairbrained head behind much of Gonjasufi's 'A Sufi And A killer' and some of the most whacked-out mixtapes of the last few years for brilliant labels like Finders Keepers and Disques Corde. First up, 'Fun Over 100' is a short but satisfying fusion of natty machine beats and arabesque synth squiggles, while 'When I'm In Awe' takes Gonjasufi on an Ethio jazz-sampling trip to heady, hashish-fragranced psych zones. 'Carpool Dummy' goes on a screwy MPC chop-up mission with a bag of killah drum breaks and the EP's most developed cut 'Shattering Inner Journeys' brings Computer Jay into the fold for a fractal collage of exotic rhythms, chase scene synths and smoked-out dub FX.

TEEBS Ardour LP / vyzerá to byt už plnohodnotný release) a znie to perfektne.

    teebs_ardour_cover.jpg

“Teebs has such a unique and tender magic, as an artist, as a producer and as a human being…He’s a gifted and rare kind…”
    - Mary Anne Hobbs

“Everything he does is gold, he does HIS thing, always has and I suspect, always will.”
    - Dimlite

As music from the Los Angeles area thrives and swells across the globe, one of it’s most beloved and deeply rooted members steps out with an LP full of infectious melodies, subtle hip-hop and a kaleidoscope of sound. Music for the imagination.

Ardour is the debut album by long time running My Hollow Drum, Dublab, and recent Brainfeeder artist, Teebs. Born in New York to Malawi and Barbados origins, Mtendere (pronounced “ten- de-ra”) (Chichewa for “Peace”) Mandowa, is a 23 year-old producer who bounced around the East Coast before finally planting his feet in the Southern California suburb of Chino Hills.

A city known for it’s rolling hills and FBI ranking of one of the safest in the United States, Teebs developed his artistry right outside Los Angeles’ county line and just south of the Orange County beach community. Music may have come by accident, literally. A skateboard injury sidelined Teebs, which led to a concentration on art.

Through great focus and vision, Teebs made a name for himself as a skilled painter. His artwork found on canvases of all form, from walls to record covers, become imbued with vibrant color, energy, and shape.

From paint and brush, Teebs slowly found himself in the world of music making.

Early in his musical pursuits, Teebs joined a group of like-minded friends and producers who went by the name ‘My Hollow Drum’. Within this crew, he was able to build new ideas, share works and perfect his production craft. Intrigued with what was going on in Los Angeles’ evolving electronic scene, he never expected to fall directly into it.

He began interning for the acclaimed online radio stream, Dublab. This sparked his self-expression, spirit and growth as an artist. Being around music, art and a creative atmosphere while brushing shoulders with the artists he admired from the area.

Teebs was accepted into the Red Bull Music Academy for their 2008 edition in Barcelona, Spain. Upon arrival back home, Teebs became even more focused on his music and art. A chance meeting with Flying Lotus led to his involvement and joining of the newly founded Brainfeeder collective. Having previously heard from local producers and DJs about this new up and comer, Lotus didn’t hesitate to take Teebs under his wing after hearing some of his earliest beats. Ardour began to bloom.

Ardour was made during two major periods of his life. Having just lost his job and with little to no money, Teebs moved into the same apartment complex as Flying Lotus and shared living quarters with another Brainfeeder affiliate, Samiyam. It was here that the beginning stages and one-half of Ardour were created. Before Teebs was aware his album was showing itself, his father who had been terminally ill, passed away. He moved back home and stopped making music.

Back home, Teebs finished were he left off.

Ardour, two years in the making, is the result of Teebs’ journey thus far. More than the music, it’s the feeling he wants to convey. The idea of hearing something you really love, the moment you know something is really special. Flying Lotus said, “Teebs music sounds like an island vacation…The way Avatar looks.” What’s often said about Teebs’ sound is the warmth it has on the listener. It’s only fitting that a title like Ardour, which is defined as “great intensity and warmth” is used to represent this essential chapter to the ever-growing puzzle of Los Angeles.
