The side of a landmark casino tower will become the world's tallest climbing wall under a plan taking shape in Reno.
The proposal for the old Fitzgerald's building, to be renamed Comm Row, cleared one hurdle last week when the city's planning commission recommended permitting construction of the climbing structure and associated balconies over the downtown streets. The full city council will discuss the matter next week.
The plan envisions climbers topping out 167 feet above the ground. Inside the building, a bouldering park, for non-roped climbing on shorter routes, would share space with a hotel, a casino and small restaurants specializing in street food.
The world's current tallest outdoor climbing wall is a freestanding 121-foot structure at a climbing center in Groningen, the Netherlands. The rock climbing gym Stoneworks in Carrollton, Texas, near Dallas, claims indoor routes up to 121 feet in converted grain silos.
