Goal of this text is to describe the basic notions and methods which could possibly open the path for development, construction and implementation of what we call to be a « NonInvasive Mind Hacking Apparatus (NIMHA) ». Since NIMHA is – in certain sense – an extension of a « mental prothesis » (MP) first proposed in (Farwell & Donchin, 1988), the introductory part of this text will aspire to explain the functioning of MP and the theoretical notions (i.e. «ERP», «oddball paradigm», «P300») upon which MP is based. Afterwards the crucial difference between «mind reading» and «mind hacking» i.e. .«intragression of an intentional will barrier (IWB)» will be introduced and three main arguments for the feasability of such an intragression will be offered. The first argument will be based upon a notyet existing experimental paradigm based on associative priming, the second argument involves the most «state of the art» approaches in the domain of statistics and «signal detection» by means of which one can substantially reduce the number of ERPs neccessary for obtaining the information stored behind IWB and the third argument will concern a huge number of possible – ERP based (CNV, P300, N400) as well as non-ERP (EDA, Oculometry, NIRS) – based scenario by which one could possibly (and in a noninvasive way) reveal the signal carrying features. Finally, some ethical consequences of deployment of NIMHA will be discussed – negative, as well as positive ones download here: Basic components of a noninvasive mind hacking apparatus |
