The German Football Association are set to announce Michael Ballack's withdrawal from the World Cup through injury, Goal.com understands.

Chelsea midfielder Ballack was forced off before half time in the club's 1-0 FA Cup final victory at the weekend. The German international captain took a heavy blow to his right ankle from Portsmouth midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng and left Wembley wearing a protective boot.

Swelling on Ballack's ankle was so severe a scan was only possible today. The result will be a terrible blow to both the player and country.
