The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and the University of Sussex
will be hosting the 6th European Association of Development Research and
Training Institutes (EADI) Summer school, on the theme of SECURITY AND THE
STATE TODAY. We would like to invite abstracts for short papers from
current or recent PhD students in any of the areas listed
below. We welcome a broad interpretation of the theme and would be happy
to receive abstracts on the subject of ongoing or recent research or
professional experience in any of the following areas:

- Citizenship and security: citizen participation in security provision;
civil society and the media and security sector performance; alternatives
to state security provision; the politics of security; political
liberalisation and citizen security.

- International interventions and security: state-building and
post-conflict reconstruction; security sector reform; international law in
insecure contexts; humanitarian intervention.

- Human security: how does/should the state deal with threats to security
related to food, the environment, natural resources and health?

- Research methods and ethics: how can we research responsibly and
effectively in insecure contexts?

********************** Timeline, travel and funding.

The summer school will take place on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th of
June, at IDS, near Brighton. It will consist of a workshop on
participatory research methods, several keynote addresses (speakers to be
confirmed) and presentation of student papers and discussion across
thematic groups. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Proposals (c.250 words) for papers of up to 10 minutes should be
submitted to eadisummerschool2010@gmail.com by Monday 19th April 2010.

wish to speak.

There are no registration costs. There may be limited funds available to
refund travel costs, but delegates are encouraged to apply to their host
institutions for assistance.

Places will be limited, so please register your interest as soon as
possible.
