Re[2]: Manic Street Preachers - Peeled Apples
Everything about the Manic Street Preachers' forthcoming Journal for Plague Lovers reeks of desperation-- the hiring of Steve Albini, the band's refusal to issue a proper single, and, oh yeah, using lyrics from a guy (original member Richey Edwards) who's been either presumed or declared dead for over a decade. It's some feat then that the first track to be aired on BBC's Radio 1 (not a single!) succeeds despite such absurdly thick pretense. Albini does in fact earn his keep, punching up the bottom end and letting Bradfield's pealing guitar handle the rest. Thankfully, Edwards' junkie screed leftovers are never more than a minor distraction. No question that "Apples" is firmly rooted in the past, splitting the difference between the near-pathologically hook-laden Generation Terrorists and the more deliberately caustic The Holy Bible, and there will undoubtedly be some who dismiss it solely on those grounds-- chalking up "Apples" as nothing more than an overly cynical, calculated attempt to cash in on the Edwards era from a band straining not to show its age. There may be some truth to the accusations, but at any rate, The Manics sure act like they're for real.
