The shakuhachi (尺八 (しゃくはち), shakuhachi? IPA: [ɕakɯhatɕi]) is a Japanese end-blown flute. Its name means "1.8 feet", referring to its size. It is traditionally made of bamboo, but versions now exist in wood and plastic. It was used by the monks of the Fuke school of Zen Buddhism in the practice of
suizen (blowing meditation).

Doc. Vlastislav Matoušek Ph.D. (1948) vystudoval na hudební fakultě AMU v Praze kompozici a postgraduální kurz hudební teorie. V roce 1996 jako stipendista Japan Foundation studoval hru na šakuhači u Kifu Mitsuhashiho v Tokiu a japonskou tradiční hudbu u prof. Osamu Yamagutiho na University of Letters v Osace. Na hudební fakultě AMU v Praze v roce 2001 obhájil disertaci Kinetika v etnické hudbě a získal doktorát v oboru hudební teorie – teorie skladby, v roce 2004 jmenován docentem.

Od roku 1991 přednáší etnomusikologii na katedře teorie a dějin hudby hudební fakulty AMU v Praze, od roku 1999 také na Ústavu pro hudební vědu FF UK v Praze. Jako teoretik se zabývá hudbou mimoevropských kultur, hudební kinetikou a organologií (Rytmus a čas v etnické hudbě, Togga, Praha 2003). Spolupracuje jako hudební publicista s Českým rozhlasem v Praze.

Je autorem mnohdy značně excentrických skladeb, často s účastí exotických nástrojů a elektroniky. S oblibou uplatňuje netradiční vyjadřovací prostředky a postupy.

Jako koncertní sólista hraje zejména honkyoku – tradiční skladby pro japonskou bambusovou flétnu shakuhachi (CD Kaligrafie - Angel 1999, CD Taki ochi – Arta Rec. 2003, CD Kaligrafie II – Nextera 2004). Je uměleckým vedoucím a dirigentem souboru soudobé hudby Ensemble 108 Hz, se kterým vystupuje při prezentacích experimentální hudby a vlastních skladeb pro hlasy, šakuhači a další nástroje, včetně exotických a folklorních z osobní rozsáhlé sbírky, často v kombinaci s elektronikou (CD Shapes of Silence - Transmusic 1994, Nextera 2006).

Na historické dudy moldánky, niněru, hackbrett, gemshorn, šalmaje platterspiel a další historické a lidové nástroje hraje a zpívá s rodinným souborem Schola Specialis Familiae hudbu období gotiky a renesance z českých pramenů (Codex Franus, Specialnik etc.) a východočeský folklór.
Na exotické perkuse (tabla, dholak, tibetské mísy), folklorní flétny a další nástroje hraje od r. 1979 meditativní hudbu inspirovanou orientem v souboru Relaxace – (CD Dhjána, CD Kadael, CD Český koan, CD Morning Prayer, CD Indické inspirace etc.).

Hej, shakuhachi poznam. Technika hrania na tento hudoby nastroje je len malo melodicka. Je tu hlavne kladeny doraz na dlhy vydich. Co vychadza prave zo zazenu. Hranie na tento nastroj je vlastne druh meditacie. A to bol aj jeho prvotny vyznam. Splynutie z okolim, prirodou.

Pocul som ze sa da virobit aj z plastovych trubiek. Len naozaj neviem ako sa vyraba. Neviete niekto_?

Kamarat je taky kutil, takze vyrobil vyborne shakuhachi z pvc tristvrtepalcovej trubky. Da sa kupit napr. v hornbachu. Momentalne sa snazime nieco s bazou, ale tam je to komplikovanejsie, kvoli rovnomernosti hrubky stien pri vrtani.

Pre mna ma ten nastroj magicky zvuk, akurat ze to chce uplne uvolnenie a pravidelny hlboky dych aby clovek dokazal zahrat len to cyklicke RO :)

Breath Shapes

When practicing ro-buki (repeatedly blowing ro, the lowest note on the shakuhachi), there are five basic ways you can shape the dynamics (the loudness and softness) of your sound:

1. Kyosui, or empty blowing, means simply breathing out naturally, not attempting any shaping of the dynamics of the sound. In practicing kyosui, make sure that you are not using any diphragm or head vibrato -- the breath is an even unaffected stream. This is the most common way of practicing ro-buki.
2. Sasa-buki, or “bamboo leaf blowing”. In this way of shaping the breath, your volume follows the contours of a bamboo leaf. The sound starts out as quietly as possible, then gets louder and louder, and finally trails slowly off into silence. This somewhat refined style of blowing is central to the very popular Kinko-ryu (Kinko school) of shakuhachi playing, so many people associate it with shakuhachi music in general. Practicing ro-buki in this style is a good way to develop more conscious control of the breath.
3. Kusabi-buki, or “wedge-shaped blowing.” Start with a fairly loud sound and let it fade out gradually over the course of the entire breath. This is a very basic technique, common in the oldest shakuhachi music. It is a very meditative way of playing and gives you a sense, I think, of the cyclic rhythms of nature. There is a variation of this type of blowing in which you start with a very full noisy blast of sound, called a muraiki, and then proceed with the usual wedge shape.
4. Sankaku-buki, or “triangle blowing.” This is the inverse of kusabi-buki: start in silence, gradually getting louder until you are at the loudest point at the end of your breath. This is difficult at first, but a great way to “grow your lungs.” To make it even more challenging, end with a muraiki (a final loud blast).
5. Tsuzumi-buki. A tsuzumi is the drum used in Noh theater, shaped like two triangles joined at their apex. In tsuzumi-buki, as you might guess, you start loud, trail out to silence, then build up again to a loud conclusion. In other words, you’re putting kusabi-buki and sankaku-buki together, all in one long breath. This very dramatic ro-buki technique can greatly strengthen your practice.
