Aah, religion. That most frustrating of subjects because, by its very definition, it cannot ever be proven one way or the other which side is “correct”.

Now, I like religion as a concept. It gives possibly insecure people a feeling that there is a plan behind it all, everything happens for a reason, that there’s something to look forward to after death. Whatever. If that’s your kink, if you need something like that to be able to get through the day, fine. Go for it! What I DON’T like, is when people try and force their beliefs upon others.

I like a lot of the underlying teachings behind it, too. They’re good, solid instructions to create a civilised society. Be nice to each other. No murdering. (Aaawww, moooom! Not even a LITTLE bit?!) Don’t sleep with your neighbour’s wife, it’s not cool. And so on and so forth. I just wish people would realise that the rest of it, all the heaven/hell junk, all the world created in 6 days stuff, that’s all nothing but a DELIVERY METHOD. It’s the vehicle to convey it all to the audience. It’s kind of like worshipping the FedEx guy without even opening the package.

Scientifically, I can understand why religions came about. Really, I can. Neanderthal Mike wakes up in the morning, yawns, and looks out from his cave up on the hillside. He thinks to himself, “Man, I have it pretty good in my little valley right here. I have a nice cozy place to sleep. There’s fresh running water within easy walking distance. Plenty of tasty animals live out in the forest just over there, enough to support my whole family. There’s a load of berries and nuts and shit for us to eat and they all taste pretty good. And the sun rises in just the right spot to warm up the cave in the morning. We’ve got everything we could ever need. This is all way too neat to have just HAPPENED - clearly it all was put here deliberately by something. And seeing as it caters to all my needs so well, I guess that something must be pretty similar to me, so that He knew exactly what we would need.” Bam, poof, there’s God.

Now this is pretty sound reasoning for primitive man and shows great evidence of humanity’s logic, extrapolation, and reasoning powers. These are the things that have made us so successful as a species. The problem is, primitive Mike over there didn’t have access to microscopes. Nor did he have any grasp of physics (beyond “what goes up must come down”), or advanced mathematics. We have developed those things now. We’ve sent shit to OTHER PLANETS. I’d say we had a pretty solid grasp of the basics, at least. And the real problem is that using just the basics, we can calculate things and theorise and extrapolate - and suddenly, we start finding explanations for stuff. Pretty fucking good explanations, at that. Ones that can be tested against whatever you like, and come out the same, every single time. It’s pretty hard to argue with evidence like that.

Which makes me think that anybody who believes in God, or specifically for the moment Intelligent Design, is either ignorant, stupid, or both. There’s no place - or need - for a creator God in the current scientific world, because we have discovered the real causes of many, MANY facets of everyday life that were previously attributed to Him.

The only place God fits in with the discoveries of science is the “God of the Gaps” theory. That is, anything that science can’t currently explain - the explanation is God. Key examples being: where did the universe come from; how did life on Earth begin; And so on and so forth. Hence, He fills in the “gaps” in the theories.

The problem with this is that the “gaps” are always being closed. As we discover more and more about the universe around us, those gaps shrink. It’s only a matter of time until they are all gone - it may not happen in our lifetimes, but eventually, at some point in the distant future, they will be. Inevitably. And then where does God fit in?

To me, “believers” seem to be people who are afraid to embrace the fact that there are some things we simply DON’T KNOW yet. Where DID the universe come from? Well, we just don’t know well enough to say for sure right now. But you can bet your arse we’re going to keep trying until we do. Whereas as an alternative, religion basically states, “We have the answers - and it’s all in this little book”. Thing is, anybody with a remotely enquiring or logical mind will notice that most of those answers don’t really stack up compared to what we’ve discovered about the world ourselves.

Oh dear, this sort of dissolved into a long stream-of-consciousness rant thing. Sorry. Carry on.
