*The Art of Critique**
Conference, 19 – 20 April 2008, opening party: 18 April, 21.00*
Languages: English (19 April) and German (20 April)

What is critique? It is certainly not simply a practice of judging, much
less of condemning. It may be that these kinds of reactive, abbreviated
forms of “critique” charged with resentment are still being preached
from the pulpits of academic teaching and announced from within the
bunkers of art criticism, a practice that is perhaps even stronger than
ever. In a contemporary concept of critique, however, it can no longer
be a matter of a more or less rigorous yes or no to a certain object. In
the contributions to the conference we want to equally problematize the
meanings of critique that have been developed for centuries, for
instance as a capacity for distinction, a critical attitude or a
practical critical activity, as well as new forms and concepts of
critique as atopical critique, embodied critique, counter-hegemonial
intervention, resistance or exodus.
