Over the last fifteen years, his work has been exhibited internationally, in Europe, North America, and Africa. He works principally in still photography and video. ArtForum has characterized his work as being "along the borders between documentary and fiction." Joachim Koester works predominantly with the media of film and photography. Whereas works such as Pit Music (1996), Day for Night, Christiania (1996) and La Nuit Américaine (1999) unquestionably derive their character from the use of such film techniques as blue filters and cuts, in his more recent work his preference is for photography. In extensive, large-format photo series and slide shows, he describes landscapes and places whose history is linked to myth. Row Housing (1999) and Nordenskiöld and the Ice Cap (2000) were produced in the Arctic, Bialowieza Forest (2001) is dedicated to the last remaining area of primeval forest in Europe, in eastern Poland. We each form our own image of what these distant (natural) spaces are like, confusing fantasy with knowledge so that, in the end, they become imaginary landscapes, spaces into which we can project images. Joachim Koester researches and documents both the visible and invisible traces left behind by history at these locations and their contemporary reality. His pictures series show an individual topography of landscape, one that is always constructed using photographic devices - and suggest a way of plotting the imaginary space which defies portrayal.
