The author of the illustration is Gherardo Cibo. An Italian noble who lived in the second half of the 16th century. He was an important diplomat working at the papal court in Rome, but in his thirties he retired to his home estate and became an artist and a botanist. It is very remarkable that a man of his status portrays himself in the wilderness digging up roots etc.
