SkinnerBlog 22.11.07 - Praging out
Prague seems to be spelt Prag over here in Prague, which is one letter away from prang. I like that. It sums up the strip club we went to last night and the feeling of total terror I felt at five to nine this morning when our conductor Rob was frantically photocopying sheet music as the realisation dawned on me that in five minutes we planned to record an orchestra. Then something happened in the following five minutes that was the opposite of prang. The room filled up with musicians and they started playing my song.
It reminded me of when I first went onstage at the Reading Festival. Hearing thousands of kids sing 'Let's Push Things Forward' back to me was a total shock. I must admit I started welling up a bit. Though I did pull it back sufficiently to deliver the next drunken lyric.
I've been working so hard on this record and it's been with a lot of different musicians, but mostly 1 to 1 based. So the moment that the orchestra started playing my song that had been written down on bits of paper by Rob and was now being played by people that I've never met who don't even speak the same language as me, I felt the throat knotting up just like that night in the dance tent. And on top of that to think that after something so perfectly serene, we will in a few short hours be hitting the strip clubs and gin joints with our usual lowlife anger.
