Astronomy vs the Human Eye It’s time for the annual debate over whether dates of religious significance should be set by human observation of a crescent moon or whether astronomy is the better choice. There is a global problem with varying dates, where the start and end of Ramadan, for instance, can vary by as much as three days. And when millions are trying to book travel to take part in Hajj, they and others have to have a firm date in mind.
