Dubstep Allstars Vol. 3: Next Steps in Dub Poetry by Christoph Härter http://www.uni-tuebingen.de/angl/reinfandt/reinfandt/web/englsem/Multi%20Ethnic%20Britain%202000%20Plus/Student%20Workshop/Christoph%20Haerter.pdf "0800 Dub may give some further evidence into this direction. The track is based on a hardly ever modulating sine bass. On top of the bassline, a monotonous semitone modulation is constructed, using the sound of a synthesizer trying to imitate a baroque cembalo. In addition, a female vocal sample („ah-haa“), modulating alongside the same semitones, pierces itself into the listeners ear. This synthetic sound construction can be interpreted as an application of the culture mode, in so far as it reminds of the European soundtrack of mercantilism and therefore colonialism and slavery. It is crucial in that respect that the culture mode would normally relate to Black history. In this case, however, it relates to the European perspective. There is indeed a transhistoric irony to that in two aspects. Firstly, the synthetic rendering of elements of baroque fugues is very obvious mockery. Secondly, a contemporaneous listener will automatically be remembered of the cacophonic soundtrack located in between cellular phones and computer games. Is this part of the “audio addictions“ that we are exposed to, according to Spaceape? " |
