Fashion junkie: Roisin Murphy

Formerly one half of the twisted pop duo Moloko, Roisin Murphy began her music career when she approached her future bandmate Mark Brydon with the come-on line, 'Do you like my tight sweater?' (It became the title of their debut album.)

After three albums they split up, and Roisin released her first solo album, Ruby Blue, last month. She will be performing at V Festival next weekend (www.vfestival.com).

Who are your favourite designers of the moment? Giles Deacon is really good. I like clothes that can be worn by a mother and a daughter, that walk that tightrope. I also love Jonathan Saunders because I think he's a real technician and a genius with print (both at Selfridges, 0870-837 7377).


Which pair of shoes has caught your eye recently? I bought three pairs of shiny Gucci loafers - two white and one black (www.gucci.com).

What is your failsafe look on days when you have 'simply nothing to wear'? I have an Yves Saint Laurent mac from years ago; I throw that on.

What do you wear when you are relaxing at home? A vintage silk dressing-gown.

What would you wear on a hot date? The same as I wear any time except I'd have my nails done. I've got nice hands and I like to draw attention to the one or two nice things that I have.

What has been your biggest fashion indulgence? Recently I bought a suit from Yohji Yamamoto that was £900, half price in the sale. It is a black linen trouser suit, very structured, with the back cut out of it (14-15 Conduit Street, London W1; 020-7491 4129; www.yohjiyamamoto.co.jp).

What is the biggest fashion mistake you have ever made? There have been so many ridiculous outfits, but I'm proud of my mistakes. They come from being self-styled and brave.

Which are your favourite shops? In London I love Rellik (020-8962 0089), Portobello Market on a Friday, b-store (020-7499 6628) and Browns Focus (020-7514 0064).

And abroad? I love shopping in Sydney and Melbourne, because there's a real mixture of little cottage industry boutiques, mad S&M and great pawnshops.

Which is your favourite bar? The Harbour Bar in Arklow. It's the old fishermen's bar in the town in Ireland I was brought up in.

Which are your favourite restaurants? I like Les Trois Garçons (020 7613 1924), Andrew Edmunds (020-7437 5708) and J Sheekey (020-7240 2565).

Who makes the best cashmere? TSE. I always buy it in the sale (www.tsecashmere.com).

Who makes the best handbags? Céline make beautiful ones - they're not too 'money'. I don't like an 'it' bag (www.celine.com).

Who makes the best jeans? My favourites are a 1970s' pair of Wranglers from Portobello market. They are wide at the bottom, but tight at the top and high waisted.

Do you take any vitamins? Omega oils and vitamin C for my brain.

What is your biggest beauty extravagance? Armani make-up. It's just brilliant - the powder doesn't leave any residue (www.giorgioarmanicosmetics.com).

What are your beauty tips? Be in love. I sound like Joan Collins, but you become quite beautiful when you're in love.
