Snow-capped and glacier-strewn, the Tavaan Bogd peaks, topped by 14,350-foot Khuiten (4374m), are Mongolia's highest. The national park, an important piece of the vast Altai-Sayan ecoregion, shares borders with China's new Xanas National Park and other nature preserves in Siberia. Snow leopard, argali, wolf, ibex, elk, golden eagle, lammergeier, snowcock, pristine tundra; lenok, grayling, other endangered and rare species make their homes here. The national park includes Shiveet Kairkhan Mountain, which for centuries has been a sacred protected area of the local Tuvan and Kazakh people. Other cultures are represented by significant and largely uncataloged archaeological treasures - Turkic burial sites, carved "stone men", and several hundred thousand petroglyphs. ![]() ![]() ![]() http://www.conservationink.org |
