The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture found in many countries. It began in the United Kigdom during the early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre.
Gothic rock was defined as a separate movement from punk rock during the early 1980s. One big difference between punk and goth are the personal politics. The punk movement was largely devoted to living only in the moment and using excess as a hedonistic political statement or more simply to just have fun right now. Goth is very introspective drawing from diverse elements of history and subculture like romanticism, gothic horror, art, science. Deathrock is a fusion of punk rock and gothic rock. List of related genres contains Horror Punk, Dark Cabaret, Post-punk, New Wave, Psychobilly.
